What Your Refrigerator Magnets Say About You
Hey, we all have refrigerator magnets. Not all of us like to admit it, but they look pretty cute and some of them are downright handy. You can have photos of your kids or in my case, pets right where you can see them all the time. You may also have one of those handily little clips that hold papers or grocery lists. Thanks to advertising magnets, the number of your favorite pizza parlor or your plumber is easily found. There might even be a save the date magnet announcing an upcoming wedding or party. We are all in the refrigerator way more than we want to admit and it’s a handy place for things we need to be reminded of.
I may be dating myself, but I remember as a kid playing with a game that you could make pictures with iron filings and a magnetic pen. We used to be fascinated with picking things up with a magnet, pins, coins, bottle caps, or nails. Today magnets are used in just about everything you can think of. Audio tapes, video tapes, floppy disks, and hard disks all record data using magnet coatings. Your credit or debit card data is on a magnetic strip.
Magnets are great to use as fastening devices. Electric screwdrivers will stick right to the screw making getting it into the wall so much easier. There is nothing more frustrating than dropping a screw twenty five times before you get it seated. If you like to sew, you’ll appreciate the pin containers with magnets. Even jewelry makers are using magnets to prevent pins from damaging delicate fabrics or make clasping a necklace or bracelet easier. There is also magnetic jewelry said to help with arthritis and insoles that claim to help everything from sore feet to sore backs.
One of the earliest uses for magnets was in compasses. As early as the 12th and 13th centuries AD, magnetic compasses were in use for navigation. The magnetized pointer can align itself with the earth’s magnetic field. Every Boy Scout is familiar with compass use. I certainly would not want to be lost in the woods without one.
Magnets are used in industry in electric motors, transformers, and generators. They can be used to separate scrap metal in salvage yards. That is pretty neat. You do not have to unload your salvaged metal by hand. They have a crane and a large magnet to remove it forms your vehicle. In medicine, the most familiar use is probably the MRI. You can view the patient’s organs without invasive procedures.
Magnets are fairly safe to humans, because our tissue has a low level of susceptibility to static magnetic fields. Children have swallowed small toy or watch batteries without incident. If they swallow several, however it can be a cause for concern as they may pinch or puncture internal organs. Patients with pacemakers should avoid magnetic fields such as an MRI machine.
These days we have magnetic signs for vehicles, magnetic calendars, business cards, and all manner of advertising magnets in every color of the rainbow. It definitely turns your refrigerator into a message center or in the case of decorative magnets, a work of art.
